• Dahl Gallery ReceptionAbout the Gallery

The planning of the Normand T. Dahl Gallery began in the 1980's.  It was the brainchild of GFHS art teachers Jean Price, Dave Rothweiler, and Jack Fisher. Funds to build the gallery were raised by GFH art students and Cal Hoiland was the gallery's architect. Great Falls Public Schools and the Great Falls High School Industrial Technology department brought the art teachers and architects' vision to fruition, opening the gallery for exhibitions in 1990.

    About Normand T. Dahl

Born in Superior, Wisconsin, Dahl graduated from high school there and continued his education at Wisconsin State University. Receiving his BA and MA, he moved to Glasgow, Montana to begin his teaching career in 1948. There, he taught art and coached basketball and football. Dahl was also an active member of the Montana Art Education Association, Montana Institute of the Arts, Glasgow Historical Society, and Glasgow Jaycees.

In 1968, Dahl moved to Great Falls to become chair of the art department at Great Falls High. Once in Great Falls, he actively participated in other local and state organizations while continuing to excel in his own artistic endeavors.

Although Dahl taught and supported all mediums, his areas of expertise were printmaking and painting, particularly watercolor. Great Falls High's permanent collection features many of Dahl's works, including both print and painted mediums.  In his print studio courses at GFHS, silkscreen, photo silkscreen, collagraph, and intaglio were among the most popular.

    The Gallery's Mission

The Dahl Gallery's primary mission is not only to celebrate art, but also to educate students through exposure to original work, so that they can appreciate a wide range of artistic expressions and better understand the history from which those expressions emerge. The Dahl aspires to not only bring those exhibitions to the students and staff at Great Falls High but to the community at large.   The gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM.  During school hours, guests are asked to stop in the office for a visitors' pass.  All exhibitions are celebrated with an artist reception.  The public, students, and staff are always encouraged to visit the gallery and enjoy the art.
