As I have written in previous years, I keep a little sign on my desk that simply says, “GRATITUDE.” It’s a simple reminder of a path to fulfillment and happiness. Research has confirmed that:
Adults who frequently feel grateful have more energy, more optimism, more social connections and more happiness than those who do not. They’re also less likely to be depressed, envious, greedy, or alcoholics. They earn more money, sleep more soundly, exercise more regularly, and have greater resistance to viral infections. (Melinda Beck, “Thank You. No, Thank You,” The Wall Street Journal, November 23, 2010)
Being grateful is a simple prescription for the happiness and fulfilment that most of us seek and I truly believe that it works! As for me, I am grateful for my work, my family, my friends and my community. I am also thankful for each of you and the work you do. This lovely poem says it far better than I can:
Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire,
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?
Be thankful when you don’t know something
For it gives you the opportunity to learn.
Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations
Because they give you opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge
Because it will build your strength and character.
Be thankful for your mistakes
They will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you’re tired and weary
Because it means you’ve made a difference.
It is easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those
Who are also thankful for the setbacks.
GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles
And they can become your blessings.
Along with a wish for Thanksgiving blessings to each of you, I also wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving break. I hope you have time to recharge your batteries as we move into the month of December, a month that will surely provide a myriad of opportunities to show our gratitude for all the blessings we have.
Take care. Be safe. Stay well.
