Homework Plan for Lewis and Clark Elementary
Homework
is another extension of the home and school partnership which seeks to provide
the communication and teamwork important to the education of our children. Homework is not assigned for disciplinary
purposes, but to promote skills and learning.
Goals
of the Homework Plan
• Strengthen basic skills through practice time.
• Develop
initiative, responsibility and self-direction.
• Build
independent study skills.
• Teach
budgeting of study time.
• Promote
parents' understanding of our educational program.
• Build students' confidence by ensuring
successful learning experiences and familiarity with materials and procedures;
and
• Encourage innovation and creativity through
open-ended, individualized assignments.
Lewis
and
• Provide meaningful, well-planned homework which
considers the needs, abilities, and resources of the students.
• Provide guided practice in the classroom to
prepare for homework.
• Inform students and parents of the homework
policy for his/her classroom at the beginning of the school year and clarify
this policy as needed.
• Ascertain that the desired learning has taken
place.
• Provide a response when one is needed for
effective learning.
Parents
are encouraged to take an active interest in students' homework in these ways:
• Promote a positive attitude toward homework.
• Provide a consistent time and a suitable place
for study.
• Make resource materials available whenever
possible.
• Assist with drills or assignments as requested
by the child's teacher.
• Communicate to the teacher circumstances which
may affect the child's
ability to complete assignments.

• Ask questions to help clarify assignments.

circumstances which may affect his/her ability to complete assignments.
Guidelines
for Average Homework Time
Grades K - 1: 10 to 15
minutes per day for two to four days.
Grades 2 & 3: 15 to
30 minutes per day for three or four days.
Grades 4 & 5: 30 to
60 minutes per day for three or four days.
Grade 6: 45-60 minutes per day for four or
five days.
