Plans for constructing a new Junior High School on the east end of the city began in 1956. In December of that year, all bid proposals for construction of East were rejected due to available funds. The architect was instructed to revise the plans which included omitting an auditorium.

At the February 6th, 1957 Board meeting, a contract for construction of East Jr. High School was awarded to Witty Construction. Cost, including mechanical and electrical work, totaled $1,961,296. The building was accepted as complete on February 2nd, 1959.

The building is a single level with a campus spread over four square blocks. East became a Middle School in 1989 and now 851 students call East home from 7:50 until 2:55 every day.
