Welcome to TPRS
(Teaching Proficiency through Reading
and Storytelling!
Most students
choose to learn a language to be able to
speak to other people. In order to facilitate this learning,
we
have adopted this exciting method of learning.
Through the
use of actions, you will learn vocabulary by first responding to the
language and later producing it on your own. After the
initial
phase of learning basic vocabulary, you will transition into story
telling. Much as a baby learns to speak by listening and
speaking, you will also naturally acquire the language through a series
of short stories to build vocabulary and sentence structures.
The
many activities used in this method of learning include drawing,
acting, speaking, reading, and writing. You will hear,
respond
to, and retell unusual stories on a variety of topics.
Purposely
unusual, these stories require that you thing about what's being said
because simple logical thinking won't apply. Oral, written,
and
drawn responses and retells to the stories will show your
comprehension. Soon, you will begin telling your own stories.
If you will relax and join in, you will have fun as you
acquire
the language. You are encouraged to use your imagination and
be
creative. Through TPRS you will learn to use the language as
a
tool for communication, just as it is meant to be!
