Happy New Year to All!

The EMS Book fairs were a success. Thanks to all of you we raised another $900 in free books which is very exciting. Thank you to those who bought and helped.  It could not have been done without all of you!

The candy and coffee fundraiser was also very successful.  With all of your help we raised over $5,000.00 for our EMS kids.  The winners who will be going to lunch with a limo ride are: Cameron Hering, Cole Nicholson, Hannah White, Bryce Kinsella, Alex Pepos, Kirsten Moffitt, Kelli McDowell, Stephen Thurston, Travis Hanning, and Kylee Hagestad.  The top selling teachers were Mr. Bill Clark and Ms. Jenn Pospisil!

Congratulations to all of them for ALL of their hard work! Thank you to ALL of the students who sold the fundraiser items.  Thank you parents, families and teachers who bought from our students. Your support was awesome!

Wow, over half of the school attended the first 3.0 party! That is amazing. Congratulations to all who were there. We are busy planning the next one so hope to see even more then!

Don't forget Spirit Wear may be purchased in the office anytime.

Attention Team Leaders

PTA is asking for your help in letting our EMS families know about our fundraiser.

Many parents said they weren’t aware of our magazine sales so we began brainstorming as to how we could let them know about this one.  It was suggested that some of you may have contact through e-mail. If this is the case would you please be so kind as to send the following:

EMS Families - Just to let you know that our PTA is having a fundraiser and students were asked to sell Martinson’s MT chocolates and Java Joe’s Coffee. The annual magazine sales were significantly less than anticipated from prior years. One reason was stated that many parents said they weren’t aware of the sale. We use these funds for various programs for our kids throughout the year. The fundraiser starts Nov. 12th and goes through Thanksgiving break, ending Dec.1st.

One 7th and one 8th grade class will have a pizza party. TEN lucky kids will have lunch via a limo!! WOW!

Thank you for your support

WHAT IS PTA?

The Parent Teacher Association or PTA has been an important part of education since 1897. Many schools encourage PTA membership and participation. Knowing the history of the PTA will help you understand the importance of getting involved.

The Parent Teacher Association or PTA began when two women from Washington, DC decided that the children of America needed a voice. Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst sent out a call to action and anticipated that maybe 200 mothers would respond. However, on February 17, 1897, more than 2000 mothers, fathers, teachers, workers, and politicians gathered for the very first PTA meeting. After setting by-laws and marking out areas that needed to be addressed, the group began its quest for children’s safety, health, and productive futures.
By the early 1900's the PTA had grown in numbers and in strength. Their hard-work and perseverance lead to the creation of kindergarten classes, a juvenile justice system, and child labor laws.

Other programs started by the founders of the PTA include:
  • The hot lunch program
  • A public health program
  • Mandatory immunizations for school children
  • Physical education classes in public schools
  • Sex education for pre-teens
  • Increased wages for teachers
Today
Today the PTA continues its fight for children health, safety, and education in our local schools and communities, in the political arena, and throughout the world. PTA members help parents learn the skills they need to raise happy confident children. There are local PTA programs in every level of the public school system; including pre-schools, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools as well as special education schools and programs.  All of which work tirelessly to bring home and school closer together, so that parents can take an active roll in their children's education and future.

Get Involved
Everyone is encouraged to get involved, not just parents and teachers. To find out more about your local PTA contact any pubic school in your area. Membership in the National PTA cost as little as 3 cents per day. By joining the PTA, you will be involving yourself in one of the greatest child advocacy groups in the world. Action Steps for Parents to Protect Your Child and Family from the Flu this School Year

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends 4 main ways you and your family may keep from getting sick with the flu at school and at home:
  1. Practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  2. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.  If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder; not into your hands.
  3. Stay home if you or your child is sick for at least 24 hours after there is no longer a fever or signs of a fever (without the use of fever-reducing medicine). Keeping sick students at home means that they keep their viruses to themselves rather than sharing them with others.
  4. Get your family vaccinated for seasonal flu and 2009 H1N1 flu when vaccines are available.
If flu conditions become MORE severe, parents should consider the following steps:
  • Extend the time sick children stay home for at least 7 days, even if they feel better sooner. People who are still sick after 7 days should continue to stay home until at least 24 hours after symptoms have completely gone away.
  • If a household member is sick, keep any school-aged brothers or sisters home for 5 days from the time the household member became sick. Parents should monitor their health and the health of other school-aged children for fever and other symptoms of the flu.
