Parents/Guardians/Students:
Here we begin the final year at East Middle School. It seems just like
yesterday that a group of seventh-grade students were full of
excitement and anticipation as they began their transition from the
elementary to the middle school. While we will continue to spend
considerable time assisting our “in-between-agers”
with social, emotional, academic and other developmental issues common
to “middle schoolers”, this year we will also
include transition information for our “pre-ninth
graders”. The counselors from Great Falls High School will
make two visits after the New Year in order to build a high school
schedule designed to meet the needs of our students.
As the eighth-grade counselor for the Chinook, Excel and V.I.P. teams,
I encourage you to contact me regarding any concerns or questions you
might have to best meet a student’s needs.
Regards,
Elaine Schoyen

Counseling
Curriculum 7th - 8th
Vision – All kids are engaged
in learning
today…for life tomorrow.
Mission – We successfully
educate students to navigate the
future.
The K-12 counseling curriculum has been approved by the GFPS Board.
The National Standards are based on the highly regarded model from
ASCA
(American School Counselor Association). This curriculum model consists
of three domains: 1) Academic Development Domain
(Big Idea: As a lifelong process, learning requires skills, knowledge
and an assumption that learning is inherent in life.) 2) Career
Development Domain (Big Idea: Our contribution to the world
is dependent upon the connections we make among our personal
attributes, our education, our skills and our experiences.) 3)
Personal/Social Development Domain (Big Idea: Individual
maturation in a complex and diverse society demands skilled
interactions, understanding of self, empathy for others and continuous
reflection.

Meet Mrs.
Schoyen
My name is Elaine Schoyen and I have been on staff at East Middle
School since 1989. My 35+ years in education has taken me from Baytown,
Texas to Bozeman, Montana and Great Falls in 1983. Educational
experiences have included special education, middle-school science and
social studies, adjunct professor of higher education and school
counseling. My husband and I have three great children and five even
greater grandchildren. I love to travel; especially to Latin American
countries. Most recently, I was fortunate to be able to travel to
Africa and hope to make a return trip eventually. Some of my most
favorite things to do (besides spending time with my family) would be
taking in museums, laughing with family and friends, skiing, listening
to a variety of great music, laughing with family and friends, golfing,
reading for pleasure, meeting people from different cultures, laughing
with family and friends, drinking superb coffee and enjoying
Montana’s beautiful Big Sky Country fishing, camping or
hiking. Did I mention that laughing with family and friends was
important? While life has not been perfect, it has certainly been good
to me. For this I have been grateful.
