Strides in the Area of Student Wellness

Great Falls School District cares about its students, and it shows by the effort being made to instill in them life long healthy habits.

Listed are a few highlights from the program:
Nutrition Guidelines have been adopted by the School Board to decrease the amount of unhealthy food and beverages available to students during the school day.• The district received a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield to hire a full-time Student Wellness Coordinator (Start date was January 4, 2010).• Breathing/ stretching exercises are occurring in classes to calm students and re-focus them.• Walking Programs are happening before school and as school begins.
INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY October 6 was a huge success! Eleven of the fifteen elementary schools participated. Students were able to enjoy the beautiful weather, learn about exercise and safety.
• Fitness activities are being used as incentives as opposed to food parties.
• Recess is being utilized to increase movement.
• Wellness information is being distributed to staff and parents through newsletters, websites, community meetings, classroom instruction, and events.
• Community partners are volunteering time to teach new ways of exercise in the schools.
• Local Grocery Stores have supported the District food guidelines by participating in the Approved Food Program.
• Students are participating in the wellness movement by creating logo options and filling out evaluations.
Healthy fund-raising options are now available.

Movement in the Classroom Trainings are occurring within the district
