Here is info to pass onto your teachers (please discuss with your principal/admin team how best to do this.)

All teachers should change passwords on all logons from “gfps” to something else, especially AD log ons and email. Here’s how for Quickmail/webmail.  Go to Quickmail or Log out (file>Log out or ctl L) of Quickmail (don’t just exit). At the screen, instead of typing in your password, click on Change Password and follow instructions. Then log into Quickmail with the new password.  Pull down Configure menu to Preferences.—DO NOT use the Change POP password. It does not work. Then click on Accounts on the left. Click on your name in the right window and click Edit (or double click on your name). Find the password box, wipe out the old and input a new password. Then, log on to Webmail using the old password. Click on Options at the top of the page and then click on Password on the left. Change the password there as well. If teachers are using only Webmail or Thunderbird, they change the password on Webmail and that is it.

For Active Directory Computer log ons, have the teachers log on with their old password and then Ctl, alt, delete and then click on Change password and follow instructions.

Locking computer: Cntl, alt, delete and click on Lock. Teachers should lock their computers when they need to step away from it for awhile. This way, they do not need to close out of all of their open windows, yet their computer is protected from students or others viewing or editing what is on their computer.

How to get to Teacher Items

Use two back slashes (above the enter key) followed by your school server name and then a single backslash followed by the word “teacheritems  Then hit the enter key or Go button. Ex: \\disk\special\teacheritems. Teachers who cannot get to your server (no hot link), probably are not set up at your school in their AD account. Please call the help desk x7393 to have their AD profile changed. You may want to email your school link to all of your teachers and have them try the link and report to the helpdesk the names of those who cannot get there. Please note: Macintosh computers will not be able to use the link. There is a back door on a mac; however, every teacher was given a PC and, therefore, should be using it.

You and your teachers can share items in the Drop box in the teachersitems area and also get important resources. What’s in there? It varies from school to school, but PLCT topics, installers for various programs and other resources. Remember to clean up this area if you use it. Don’t leave big items on the server. Have teachers transfer them to their computers and then delete.

Teachers not on active directory/using their home computers will be prompted to enter their AD log on and password when they map to the server.

Elevated install

Put the installer (usually .exe file) into the C/Installers folder (if no Installers folder exists, create one by right clicking>New>folder and renaming). If downloading from the Internet, choose Save rather than Run, and Save it directly into the C/Installers folder.

Once the installer is in the C/Installers folder, then use the elevated install (choose the Vista if needed). It is located on your building server. To access, open Documents and type the mapping into the Address bar. examples below:

\\disk\special\teacheritems

Then put the Elevated install or Elevated Install Vista, depending on operating system on the desktop.

When you click on the Elevated Install exe, it will prompt you to locate the installer. Navigate to the C/Installers folder and choose the correct exe file.

Using Firefox with Override

Download the IE-Tab add on—you need Firefox 3.0 or higher.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

Then, after installing, when you need to over ride, pull down the Tool options to IE-Tab and add the page to the tab options. Now you will be able to type in your username and password for the override.

 For Trainers:

What training do we want and what facilitator should we hire? Whom would you like to see at our Summer Institute? Suggestions given: Web 2.0/3.0 tools for the classroom; freeware; Safety: viruses, spyware, maintaining computers; Webpages; the Future of Technology. Suggested speakers: Leslie Fisher, William Richardson, Joe Dockery, Jason Ohler

Conventions: Feb. 16-20 in Seattle is the NCCE convention this year. Check out ncce.org to see what was offered last year. In April is the state convention (two school days) usually in Billings.  The second week after school is out is MIET (Montana Institute on Educational Technology). You may attend one day or all five. 12 hours of PIR is offered or you may take the institute for 2 college credits if you prefer.

Issues:

Driveshield—teachers would like to have passwords or open up user accounts

Prioritizing work tickets—how does the system work?  Principals are the ones who can authorize upping priorities. The principal can call the help desk and request a ticket be put on high.

Why do we assume teachers will mess up? Why not just deal with those who do instead of punishing all with no rights and no blocker override?
