Literacy “Every child can read”

The Great Falls Elementary Literacy Program strives to provide the best reading start for all students. Programs include Kindergarten Concept support, Read Well, Early Steps, and Harcourt Brace Trophies Intervention. These programs are designed for early intervention or remediation of students with language or reading difficulties.

Elementary literacy teachers go into the kindergarten classroom for Kindergarten Concept Groups if needed. These small groups concentrate on activities that teach and reinforce the children’s knowledge of basic skills necessary for productive kindergarten participation and language development.

Read Well, a phonics based program, is designed for kindergarteners and first graders. This program includes both letter-sound relationship and comprehension skills. Early Steps is one-on-one tutoring of early readers. Harcourt Brace trophies Intervention pre-teaches and re-teaches in small groups to give all students success in classroom reading. It is coordinated with the classroom teaching of reading.

Middle school literacy utilizes Language! This comprehensive program is designed to fill in any gaps that have developed in the student’s reading. High school literacy concentrates on improving literacy. Students create a portfolio based on reading-based rubrics.
