Fourth Year Benchmarks for Second Language Curriculum
I. To experience various aspects of the target culture, by the
end of the
fourth year, a student will to work independently to:
*understand extended portions of authentic spoken language
*read and respond to original-text literature selections
*examine current events from authentic sources
*explore regional differences in culture and language
*investigate travel and intercultural exchanges
*investigate language-based careers
II. To manage the skills necessary to
communicate proficiently, by the end of
the fourth year, a
student will be able to:
*research and correct grammar and usage
errors identified by the instructor (self-edit)
*expand on personal style of expression using extended
vocabulary
*participate in impromptu and prepared discussions
on a variety of topics
*research career-related applications of the target language
*use listening skills to comprehend, analyze, and report on
authentic spoken language recordings
III. To create personally meaningful foreign language
interactions, by the end of the fourth year, a student
will be able to expand upon and use more complex language to:
*conduct correspondence in the target language
*utilize media technology (e-mail, internet, publications)
*research and respond to literature, current events, historical and cultural issues, music, and art
*expand study of native arts (film studies, poetry)
*discuss personally meaningful topics in a variety of ways
(i.e. keeping a journal in the target language)
*incorporate media into skits and presentations
*communicate with native speakers
*expand conversation and personal expression through
discussion and writing
