CONTENT STANDARDS AND BENCHMARKS

 

Comprehend, analyze and respond to media.

Students will:

·        analyze and evaluate mass media as informed consumers

·        discuss what is newsworthy

·        identify the components of newspapers, magazines and yearbooks

 

Understand historical, cultural, ethical and legal influences

Students will:

·        understand the rights and responsibilities of free speech

·        gain an awareness of the options for careers in journalism and related fields

·        comprehend the ethical and legal standards of journalism:  Plagiarism, copyright, image manipulation, libel, privacy, obscenity, equal access, releases

 

Deliver ideas and information clearly, creatively, effectively

Students will:

·        expand skills to communicate effectively with the school and local community

·        recognize, evaluate, write and edit according to journalistic styles

·        identify the differences between objective and persuasive writing

·        practice accurate, balanced, fair journalistic writing

·        gain a working knowledge of journalistic terminology

 

Manage resources and technology

Students will:

·        actively seek, gather and evaluate information using a variety of sources

·        learn the basics of desktop publishing

·        acquire and disseminated knowledge through technology

·        practice goal-setting and time-management techniques

Students will:

·        demonstrate basic design

utilize photography, graphics, art and layout to communicate effectively
