Math Literacy

Guiding Principle

 

A student at the proficient level in Applied Math will be able to demonstrate understanding of high school mathematics by solving problems, reasoning, communicating, representing, and making connections based on the following indicators:

 

Benchmark/Topics

As a result of studying Math Literacy, I will be able to:

(1) Number Operations

·        Whole Numbers

·        Decimals

·        Fractions

2.1.1  Demonstrate proficiency of number operations, when I can add, subtract, multiply and divide

o     Whole Numbers

o     Decimals

o     Fractions

 

(2) Problem Solving using

·        Whole Numbers

·        Fractions

·        Decimals

·        Percents

 

1.1.2  Demonstrate my ability to solve word problems when I can

o     Take the words of a problem and answer the question being asked using the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division involving

o     Whole numbers

o     Fractions

o     Decimals

 

(3) Percents

·        Decimal to a percent

·        Percent to a decimal

·        Percent of a number

2.1.3 Show understanding of percents when I can

o     Change a decimal to a percent

o     Change a percent to a decimal

o     Find the percent of a number

 

(4)  Measurement

·        English units

·        Metric units

·        Area and Perimeter

 

5.4.4 Show an understanding of measurement and its uses when I can

o     Measure lengths in English units

o     Measure lengths in Metric units

o     Find the area and the perimeter of basic polygons

 

(5) Basic Statistics and Probability

·        Tables, charts and graphs

·        Basic probability

·        Practical applications of basic statistics and probability

1.1.5 Show an understanding of basic statistics and probability when I can

o     Read, interpret and react to tables, charts and graphs

o     Find the probability of an event occurring

o     Interpret the information given in a newspaper, magazine or other publication using my knowledge of statistics and probability

 

(6) Throughout this course the following will be stressed

·        Appropriate Labeling

·        Importance of mathematics to their lives

 

As a result of studying Math Literacy I will

o     Work to improve my study skills

o     Use appropriate labeling on problems

o     Discuss with my teacher and other members of the class the importance of mathematics in my life
