Introduction to Health Occupations (Med Prep I)
Content Standard 1: Students will have an understanding of healthcare delivery.
Demonstrate knowledge of career related resources.
Contrast the differences between certification, registration and licensure.
Identify aptitudes and interests of people who have careers in healthcare professions.
Content Standard 2: Students will communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Demonstrate knowledge of medical vocabulary (abbreviations, prefixes, suffixes and root words).
Apply effective written and oral communication skills in a healthcare professional’s setting.
Know and use appropriate technology to create, store and print information.
Content Standard 3: Students will explore the science, math and technology required for proficiency within the area of healthcare occupations.
Identify scientific information related to specific healthcare occupations.
Demonstrate knowledge and competency in math as it relates to healthcare occupations.
Content Standard 4: Students will understand the legal and ethical responsibilities, limitations and implications of their actions within the healthcare delivery setting.
Demonstrate knowledge of confidentiality.
Recognize and identify basic rules of ethics for healthcare personnel.
Understand purpose, history and contents of Patients Bill of Rights.
Develop an awareness of the governance within healthcare.
Identify the personal/professional traits of a healthcare worker.

Understand Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and how it relates to health professions.
Content Standard 6: Students will understand the existing and potential hazards to clients, coworkers and self.
Define asepsis.
Know appropriate hand washing and gloving procedures.
Explain the difference between an endemic, pandemic and epidemic.
Define OSHA and the agency’s implications in the workplace.
List several public and private health organizations and describe how they monitor and promote public health/safety (World Health Organization, CDC).
Identify and define potential health risks in a real world situation.

Content Standard 2: Students will communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Use appropriate terminology in describing body systems and functions.
Apply research information skills in preparation for written or oral presentations.
Content Standard 3: Students will know the basic science, math and technology content for proficiency within the area of healthcare occupations.
Demonstrate comprehension of the characteristics of life and the principles of homeostasis.
Demonstrate knowledge of the human body related to medical terms and anatomical terms.
Distinguish among the different levels of biological organizations.
Understand how body systems contribute to the normal and abnormal functioning of the human body.

Demonstrate an understanding of bioethical/legal that surface in society as related to healthcare.
